Description
Mattamuskeet Lodge is located on the edge of Lake Mattamuskeet, near Swanquarter, NC. It was originally built in 1915 as the world's largest pumping station, with the purpose of draining the lake. When that project ended, it became a hunting lodge in 1937. The chimney of the coal-powered pumping station was converted into a 128-foot observation tower that resembles a lighthouse.
This historic landmark has been largely empty for more than three decades, since it closed to goose hunting in 1974.
It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1980. In 2006, the United States Congress deeded Mattamuskeet Lodge to the State of North Carolina.
