A wild horse poses on Shackleford Banks with the Cape Lookout lighthouse in the background.
Shackleford Banks is the southern-most barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore and is home to more than 100 wild horses. Horses were introduced to North America by European explorers and colonists. Records show horses have been living on the Outer Banks for centuries. Genetic research shows evidence of Spanish ancestry in the Shackleford Banks herd.
